Twist Glass

The structure made of twisted flat bars form the base of the Twist table. Two times three elements create a rigid, stable structure. The glass surface of the table showcases the twisted metal construction below. Twist is finished by hand, including the multi-step, careful process of attaching the base to the glass top. The round table with a comfortable size can easily accommodate four to six people and makes a perfect dining table at home or meeting surface in an office.

Folded aluminum sheet parts are welded together to provide different furniture items for the Studio of Deutsche & Japaner such as side tables, a sideboard, and two couch table elements. Each part is folded in a 90-degree angle and welded onto the next folded surface. This pragmatic way of construction creates a grammar that connects the different furniture items and formulates a collection that present and preserve all things around the studio.

Stability through torsion – the structure made of twisted flat rods forms the base frame of the Twist side table. Two times three elements create a rigid, stable structure which, thanks to the twisting, nevertheless appears light and delicate. The table communicates portability. It can be used flexibly in the most varied of spaces and continually interacts in new ways with other items of furniture and objects.

Klemens Grund and Thomas Schnur deal both with material, production, form and function to design a furniture item. The objects from Grund are given an atmospheric quality by the play of proportion, material and construction. Schnur's current projects reflect his interest in reduction and necessity.

The exhibition in HBKsaar gallery was initiated and curated by Prof. Mark Braun.

The curved backrest correspond to the human body and provide support and comfort. The seat can be equipped with wood or upholstered surfaces. Due to the aesthetic and constructive reduction, the design does not need a specific surrounding and is therefore universally usable.

Among the innumerable objects available around the world, there are a number of objects which are known to everybody. Thomas Schnur calls them common things: These are objects which everybody - regardless of their culture, nationality, or status - has seen somewhere or has used them. Thomas shares his experiences, insights, and thoughts, in chronological order from childhood to today, on a selection of 21 common things.

At one time an integral part of people’s kitchens, the wash area gradually evolved over time into a separate self-contained room. Now though we are increasingly seeing bathrooms moving back into the living areas. The Stand up collection features a universal design that deliberately avoids aligning itself with one specific location. Instead, the collection embraces the notion of using furniture flexibly throughout the home. The side table can stand in the shower, or equally next to your sofa, while the curtain can screen off the shower or also serve as a suspended living room partition. The platforms and compartments of the plateau stands make personal items accessible at a convenient height to users when they are standing up.

Station is an object between cable drum and side table. The furniture has an open structure which evokes associations of a tool. The front case is a deposition for tablet, mobile phone or magazines. The container on the back offers space for a multiple plug. An extension cable can be winded around the base frame. Color and form of the object respond to the language of combinable technical products and cables. In this way the object act as go-betweens of device, furniture and living space.

The thought to design a stool in polyester-fibre-fleece came through the fascination for the material and its processing possibilities. It has a pleasant haptic and is both noise-reduced and sound absorbing. The seating surface of the ‘felt stool’ is round and communicates mobility in all directions. Its ground is square and generates stability and orientation in the room.

One standard solid oak plate as starting material is sawed into single components leaving almost no waste. The vertical and horizontal arrangement of these poles, ledges and boards results into a construction where junctions are glued at the sides and screwed at the fronts. These alternate layers ensure a dismantlement without an impairment of the stability. Standard is a shelf system. Its form stands down to be a functional utility space for the user's personal things.

The factory stands for a place that today became something of a rarity. Formerly, at the beginning of the industrialisation, the factory initiated the modern serial production. Mostly on the brink of the city, people were working in physical contact with the material and machines. Today modern fabrics and production halls remind increasingly on laboratories. Technical precision and the quantity of robots control the halls. Also Köln-Ehrenfeld was formerly a working district. Today the factories and manufacturers are disappearing; The production halls are turning into ateliers and agency facilities.

The idea of the Construct Table is to trace the table back to its construction to subsequently rethink it through a factory. This approach leads to a table which reminds of the classic bistro table and simultaneously communicates its fabrication in sheet metal. The side table consists of a round table top and three identically constructed parts which are laser cut out of 3mm sheet metal. Afterwards the parts are fixed through spot-welding.

pinqponq backpacks celebrate urban life. This approach is also revealed in the design of the pinqponq pop-up store. Striking white arrow-shaped stripes applied to one door and two windows bring to mind road signs and these lead visitors intuitively through the store. The table-tennis table evokes Sunday afternoons spent in the park. And the wooden bench woos you over to sit and watch the world go by. This outdoor furniture provides the setting for the actual main attraction here – the backpacks. These are displayed on the walls, almost as if strapped to the backs of invisible passers-by at the heart of this urban microcosm.

Traffic signs are pointing images whose meaning needs to be learned by anybody who moves on streets. This way and Stop take up the symbolism of these omnipresent signs and transform the products of the public space into objects of the private interieur. Stop sign and driving direction become wall mirrors. The driving direction features a special characteristic: It‘s rotatable in all directions.

Rubber Lamp is created by the interest in the in and outside of products. The table lamp consists of two parts: the construction inside (flexible steel rod, switch and electricity components) and the heat resistant silicone outside. The cover protects the inner components and gives the lamp an organic and warm attitude.

                                                  Forest Chair

In forests and villages we encounter many utility objects crafted out of tree trunks. Usually the language of these elementary products is formed due to pragmatic reasons. To our industrial informed society these sylvan items often appear rough and solid but also idyllic and indigenous. The structural handling, the transformation, the involvement of the symbolic power of these objects built the core process of developing the Forest Chair.

                                                    Hook up

18 hooks wind their way around a metal rod that is embedded in a round steel base. The coat stand Hook-up saves space and also material: Since all basic components are threaded they themselves serve as the connecting elements. The hooks are screwed in the rod, and the rod is screwed in the metal base.

The Sheet Metal Cabinet plays with the striking features of two everyday items. One of these is the metal locker with its typical ventilation slits, the other, the frame of a trestle table. What they have in common is the fact that they are made of bent sheet metal. The Sheet Metal Cabinet adopts their character, optimizes their proportions and finally transfers both elements to a new product.

The drain or plunger is an item, which, though it receives little attention, is actually extremely useful. Rubber Table adopts its idiosyncratic aesthetic and transfers it into a new environment. The rubber plunger has become a table leg – setting in motion a new way of looking at this ambivalent object. Manufactured with dyed foam rubber the color and the surface feel of the original object are preserved.

Primarily in forests and villages, conventional wooden benches are a common phenomenon. Crafted from untreated tree trunks, every one of them is handmade and unique. Inspired by the honesty and simplicity of this man-made object, this is a bench that in terms of appearance, shape and materials retains the fundamental qualities of the traditional wooden bench. An optimized, standardized processing technique reinterprets the wooden bench and gives it access to the urban environment.

Bench Chair clearly takes its inspiration from the famous Monobloc Chair but puts the associations that any chair evokes into a new context. Its curved shape is contorted into a voluminous body, thereby creating an abstract space, such that observers are confronted with a transformed hybrid.
